Where the lights don't move and the colors don't fade

The southwest corner of Foster and Orrington. I hated that one corner during the wintertime. Those darn students renting that house never ever shoveled and it left a build up of ice looming in front of the sidewalk. Actually I preferred when it was frozen because then my feet didn’t get wet. Every single time I needed to go anywhere I had to cross that stretch of ice/slush. I'd do anything to avoid it, walking on the ice around it or crossing the street a good amount to avoid shoe damage.

Last week when I left my college apartment for the last time, I realized that the ice puddle wasn’t there anymore. It hadn’t been there for a long time. That one corner, the bane of my existence in the winter, had slowly returned to concrete and grass. Yet I hadn’t given it a second thought when the snow was melting. I’d forgotten to be thankful for the easy walking that warmer weather had brought.

Don't think about the choices that you make

Some random life lessons I learned this quarter:

Light in August by William Faulkner is an amazing book. I have had moments of intense love and hatred for Faulkner. Mostly hatred.

The boys of 1D are so far removed from me, they can never let me down. Hence why I prefer them to reality. Except when Zayn possibly cheated on his girlfriend. That was a rough moment. I guess one can't be that beautiful without a few mishaps.

All you can eat sushi is dangerous. I should not order 15 roles and 7 appetizer between four people. I will feel sick, and I will find alternative ways to get rid of said sushi.

My hair cannot last for more than a day without washing, so please learn. I do not have the hair of Beyonce.

The best way to end the quarter is most definitely to have an impromptu dance party with my roommates.

I don't know how to cook. Have I had fruit this week? No. How many eggs have I had in the last three days? Way too many. And I don't even really like eggs.

There are a lot of things I hate about Texas. But there are also a lot of things I love about Texas. Like Friday Night Lights and my best friend from high school. She is beyond the coolest.

Winter quarter be gone. Nashville here I come :)

She may contain the urge to run away

I'm not really sure what this blog is, now that I have returned to the Etats-Unis, and now that my life has returned to a boring yet contented normalcy. So I think it will once again be anything I want, anything that inspires me, but with less personal musings.

Here I present you with a beautiful apartment, owned by this dude. Look and desire. Is it sad that one of my thoughts while looking at these is jealousy? Jealousy to have that apartment, but mostly to open the windows and have warm air flow through the apartment. I shouldn't be complaining, I only had to wear one pair of pants today...

I saw sinners making music, I've dreamt of that sound

My happiness is really tied to the weather... I don't think you can quite understand a beautiful day, until you have spent a winter in Chicago or a summer in Dallas. Having experienced both these extremes this year, I can fully take in today. Can it be 56 and sunny more often?

Check out this beautiful home in Southwest France. In the words of Liz Lemon... I want to go to there. My dream is that once my sister and I make enough money down the road (haha), we and my parents can buy a home in the middle of nowhere, preferably the Northeast (even though France sounds lovely too...), where we can escape separately or together. I imagine it would look something like this home.

Who’s got two thumbs, speaks limited French, and hasn’t cried once today? This moi.

Yes I got this title from Liz Lemon :)

I've been a little confused about life lately to the point where I ate Dove dark chocolate squares in hopes that the wrappers would give me some sense of direction.  Didn't work.  "Do what feels right?" "Give a little love?"  Hmm perhaps... but not really the advice I'm looking for.

I definitely have been near tears too many times this month (read: overly emotional and super annoying). 2012 is bah. ugh. ew. so far.  But I'm tired of being stressed and cold and sad so I've decided to write a list of things that I'm thankful for.

1. the weather. Today was 30s and sunny... I wore converse today.

2. going to a school where it is not weird to stay in and do homework Friday night... or Saturday night... or pretty much every night in my case.  It gets crazy.

3. les amis. I don't have to worry about finding someone to watch tv, eat, drink, or discuss religious and philosophical musings (true story).  Although I still haven't found someone to watch The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo with me... anyone interested?

4. Chicago. Walking downtown is a real wakeup call that I'm not the center of the world. And that there is life outside the bubble of Northwestern.

5. The parentals. They are pretty great. And cute. And I miss them.

6. Taking 20 minutes every night to read. So what if I have a paper due in two days on a book I haven't read half of yet... I'm gonna give myself 20 minutes to read whatever I want.  I'm looking at you Margaret Atwood.

Dude, I got this.  Winter Quarter got nothin' on me.

Run deep, run wild

Oh Chicago.  This weekend I finally went to Wicker Park with my friend :)  I really like the neighborhood, although it was too darn cold to check everything out.  One great place we wandered into was Myopic Books, a lovely used-book store.  We had a light lunch at Forno (if you're wondering, the pizza was excellent) and attempted to shop at Steve Madden and Marc Jacobs, but then realized we had no money (I mean a $50 ring at Marc Jacobs?! no thanks).  Here are a few photos (taken by me) of the Milwaukee, Damen, North intersection downtown, my friend at lunch, and the bookstore.  Post title from I Follow Rivers by Lykke Li.

Watching telly, drinking wine

Happy holidays!  If your holidays have been anything like mine, the idea of getting up and celebrating New Year's Eve sounds exhausting.  Moving off that spot on the couch and putting on something semi decent?  Oof, sounds like hard work.  Depending on how fancy your party plans are that night, here are some outfit ideas... from casual to classy.  (I would choose the first outfit for myself... with a winter coat of course.  Imagining that outfit with the Chicago wind makes me hyperventilate.)

These lovely outfits are from Tulip Louise, Le Blog de Betty, Atlantic-Pacific, and This Time Tomorrow. Blog title from Who'd Have Known by Lily Allen.

and finally a lovely message from Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt for the New Years :)

Girl put your records on

I know, I know what you're thinking... two midterms today, and I post on my blog instead?  Being happy and relaxed is much more important.
Currently I am completely tired of being cold all the time.  These two sweaters are extremely cute and perfectly describe how much I want to be warm and cozy.

Now I'd really like to transition into Spring already and wear semi less covered clothes, but for now I'll just have to dream...

Just a bit of warmth

Well I'm back in cold, cold Chicago.  Here is some photography by Eliot Lee Hazel that makes me happy.  Enjoy!

I love me some chocolate cake

For Christmas I made an Espresso Cake with hot Kahlua syrup for the fam.  I am not gonna lie, it was pretty darn good :) My sister (check out her professional site) took the pictures of my oh so yummy cake. Here's the recipe:

THE CAKE:
3 tablespoons instant espresso
1/4 cup boiling water
1/4 cup cold water
2 1/4 cups sifted cake flour
1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
1/2 teaspoon freshly grated lemon rind
1 1/2 cups sugar
3 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup sour cream
THE HOT KAHLUA SYRUP
2/3 cup Kahlua or Tia Maria liqueur
1/3 cup water
3 tablespoons honey
  1. Position rack in the lower third of the oven and preheat to 350.  Butter a 9-inch fluted ring.  Dust the pan with all purpose flour, then invert the pan over the kitchen sink and tap to remove excess.
  2. To make the cake: In a small bowl, dissolve the espresso in boiling water.  Stir in teh cold water and set aside to cool.
  3. Using a triple sifter, sift together the flour, cocoa, baking soda, and salt.  Set aside.
  4. Cut the butter into 1-inch pieces and put them and lemon rind in the large bowl of an electric mixer fitted with beaters or paddle attachment.  Soften on low speed, then increase speed to medium-high and cream until smooth and light in color, about 1 1/2 to 2 minutes.
  5. Add the sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time, taking about 6 to 8 minutes to blend it in well.  Scrape the sides of the bowl occasionally.
  6. Add the eggs, 1 at a time at 1-minute intervals.  Blend in the vanilla and sour cream.  The mixture will look somewhat curdled at this point.  This is okay.
  7. Reduce mixer speed to medium-low.  Add the dry ingredients alternating with the espresso, dividing the dry ingredients into three parts and the espresso into two parts, starting and ending with the flour.  Mix just until incorporated after each addition.  Scrape the sides of the bowl and mix for 10 seconds longer.
  8. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the surface with the back of a tablespoon.  Center the pan on the rack and bake in the preheated oven for 55 to 65 minutes, or until the cake begins to come away from the sides of the pan and a twig of straw or toothpick inserted into the center comes out dry.
  9. Remove from the oven.  Set the pan on a cake rack for 10 to 15 minutes to cool slightly.
  10. To make the syrup: In a small saucepan blend the Kahlua, water, and honey.  Bring to a slow boil and simmer 2 to 3 minutes.  Remove from heat.  Pierce the top of the cake with a wooden skewer and slowly spoon the hot syrup over the top of the hot cake.  Let stand in the pan for at least 1 hour to allow cake to absorb all the liqueur, then invert onto a rack and remove pan.
SERVING SUGGESTION:  Prepare recipe of Ganache Glaze (below).  Leave cake on the rack, and place the rack over a large shallow pan.  Spoon the glaze over the top, allowing the icing to flow gently down the sides in between the ridges.  Al of the cake does not have to be covered with the glaze.  Carefully arrange the cake on a serving plate.
GANACHE GLAZE
3 ounces imported semisweet or bittersweet chocolate
3 ounces heavy cream
1/2 tablespoon light corn syrup
1/2 tablespoon Grand Marnier, Cointreau, or dark Jamaican rum
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon hot water, if needed
  1. Break the chocolate into small pieces and set aside.
  2. In a small saucepan, heat the heavy cream and corn syrup on low heat until it comes to a gentle boil.  Immediately pour the hot cream over the chopped chocolate.  Let it stand for about 1 minute, then stir the chocolate and cream together, slowly mixing until all the chocolate is melted.
  3. Blend in the liqueur or rum and vanilla.  If the surface is oily, stir in 1/2 teaspoon of hot water.  The glaze should thicken as it stands, but remain pourable.  If the ganache fails to thicken, chill it in the refrigerator for 4 to 5 minutes.  Watch carefully, as it must not be too cold.

All I want for Christmas is you ;)

I hope you had a wonderful Christmas!  Here are some winter outfits to get ready for the cold to come (shiver, shiver).  I love this forest coat, this girl's city outfit, and this scarf.

I love these New Year's Eve outfit ideas and these simple rings.  Keep warm :)
